LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Nevada Supreme Court has upheld the battery and attempted assault convictions of a man serving 6-to-15 years in prison for dousing a man with gasoline and setting him afire at a Las Vegas convenience store in 2012. Sixty-four-year-old Patrick Newell argued at trial and on appeal that he was defending himself because the man who was burned, Theodore Bejarano, posed a threat of bodily harm to him.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — An off-duty Las Vegas police officer mistakenly shot a relative at her North Las Vegas home but the family member is expected to survive. The Las Vegas Sun reports that North Las Vegas police say the officer and her husband were sleeping when they heard the relative, a woman who also lives there, arrive home unexpectedly. The couple went to investigate and shot the woman in the process.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police say a man deliberately sped up his car as another man clung to it. Police say the hit-and-run occurred in the parking lot of an ampm convenience store. Police say the car fled the scene but an officer located the driver, 31-year-old Jesus Paez-Rivas, a short distance away.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police say two people are dead after the car they were in jumped a sidewalk and then crashed into street lights. According to investigators, a Hyundai was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver somehow lost control. Emergency responders went to the scene but pronounced the 31-year-old male driver and a 27-year-old male passenger dead.
