SPENCER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A 27-year-old Grand Rapids woman found shot to death in a field with her 3-year-old daughter on top of her body had been reported missing by relatives.

Police tell The Grand Rapids Press, WOOD-TV and WZZM-TV that the woman may have been suffering from postpartum depression. The woman and her two children were reported missing Friday night.

Police are investigating whether she killed herself. A gun was found nearby.

The girl was conscious but had a bullet fragment lodged in her head. Police say the wound appears to have been accidental.

The woman's 5-month-old son was in an infant seat in a car parked nearby. People walking in the area found the car Saturday in Spencer Township, northeast of Grand Rapids.

Both children were being treated at a hospital.
