WEST VALLEY CITY — Police have arrested a third person suspected of running over and killing a man as he tried to recover a trailer that was being stolen.

Jay Urry, 41, turned himself in to West Valley police and was arrested Saturday, taken into custody in the death of 49-year-old Eric Carter. Urry was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder, robbery and obstruction of justice.

Carter was found dead in the middle of the road near 5000 W. Royal Ann Dr. (4490 South) on Dec. 22 as police responded to calls of a theft. Police said Carter was run over and killed as he was trying to prevent the theft of the trailer, which he had borrowed from a friend.

Police said Urry and another man, 34-year-old Jesse Searle, had taken the trailer earlier in the day, then returned later with Jeanette Miner, 26, to allegedly steal more items from the location. Carter spotted the three and called 911 to report someone was taking his friend's trailer.

As he was on the phone with dispatchers, Carter reported he had jumped into the back of the pickup, according to police.

Investigators believe the truck stopped at one point at a church, 4420 S. Early Duke St. (5100 West), where Searle walked away. Urry and Miner, however, allegedly confronted Carter and got into a verbal argument with him.

Miner got back into the truck and started to drive away while Carter was still "standing on the tongue of the trailer," according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

The truck caught up with Searle, at which point Miner told him to "get (Carter) out of there," the report states.

Miner took off again as the fight continued between Carter and Searle, police said, and Carter was run over and killed.

Police later found the truck abandoned in Kearns, and Searle and Miner were found, arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder, robbery and obstruction of justice.
