BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A tornado touched down in north-central Alabama on Christmas evening. It was the latest wave of severe weather that's hammered the South during the holidays. Elsewhere in the region, dozens of people faced the loss of their homes and possessions. But many said they were thankful to see another Christmas. Deadly tornadoes have left at least 15 people dead.

LONDON (AP) — Parts of northwest England already hit hard by flooding in recent weeks are under severe flood warnings today. Forecasts are calling for more heavy rain. Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes in the Lancashire area 220 miles northwest of London after water breached flood barriers following torrential downpours.

BEIRUT (AP) — An official says the agreed-on pullout of a few thousand Syrian militants, including IS fighters, and their families from the southern edge of Damascus has been put on hold. Unconfirmed reports say the assassination of a top rebel commander near Damascus on Friday night has torpedoed the deal to evacuate the fighters.

BERLIN (AP) — Police in Vienna say they have stepped up security precautions. There's been a warning to several European capitals about the possibility of an attack using explosives or firearms between Christmas and New Year. But authorities in Vienna say they see no need to call off any events.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire couple — or, more correctly, former couple — can't legally undo their divorce. That's the ruling of the state Supreme Court. The couple, who had been married 24 years, said they've reconciled. But they couldn't get the divorce vacated. No word yet on why the man and woman couldn't simply do the obvious: remarry.
