ISLAMABAD (AP) — More than 30 people are reported hurt in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar (puh-SHAH'-wuhr) from a strong earthquake that shook parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The quake rattled buildings and forced sleeping residents out of their homes. An emergency rescue service spokesman says the injuries in Peshawar were caused by houses or walls collapsing. The quake was centered in Tajikistan near the Afghan border.
HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) — Parts of Mississippi have remained under a flood watch today, with forecasters warning that a strong storm crossing the central part of the state could bring hail and winds of more than 40 miles an hour. This, as families that were hit hard by Wednesday's storms struggled to salvage a Christmas. Members of the Marine Corps brought donated toys to a community center in Holly Springs.
HAVERHILL, Mass. (AP) — Police in Massachusetts say they don't know why two adult women -- a mother and daughter -- would make up a story about seeing a man toss a baby into a river on Christmas Eve. But the police say they determined that it wasn't true. It triggered a large search, including divers and a state police helicopter. The two women are due in court Monday.
NEW YORK (AP) — It's not the kind of tradition you associate with Christmas -- but neither are temperatures in the 60s in New York. The combination of record-setting temperatures and some powerful waves drew more than two dozen surfers to New York's Rockaway Beach on Christmas morning. One surfer said the waves were a gift from Santa -- but that he had to be done in time to open the ones from his girlfriend.
LONDON (AP) — Justin Bieber's Christmas wish: granted. The pop star had urged his British fans to go easy on buying his song "Love Yourself" — and support instead a charity single by The National Health Service Choir. And it worked. "A Bridge Over You" came from behind to overtake The Beeb to win the number one spot.
