Los Angeles (dpa) - An 18-year-old from Puerto Rico outshown 85 other contestants from around the world to be crowned the new Miss Universe in Los Angeles.
Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza, who wants to be an actress in Latin and American film, began her one-year reign by being crowned Sunday night by her predecessor, Natalie Glebova of Canada.
The first runner-up was Japan's Kurara Chibana, and the other top five finalists came from Switzerland, Paraguay and the United States.
The women were judged in swimsuit, evening-gown and interview categories.
