STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut junior center Amida Brimah broke the third finger on his right hand during practice on Monday and will have to undergo surgery.

The diagnosis and treatment came from an examination on Tuesday morning. The 7-footer from Ghana is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday and is expected to miss the next 6 to 8 weeks.

Brimah missed a game for the first time in his career Sunday with a groin injury as the Huskies (7-3) beat UMass Lowell. It broke a streak of 84 consecutive games played by the co-captain.

Brimah, who had started 44 straight games before Sunday, is averaging 7.8 points and 5.2 rebounds and leads the team in field goal percentage (72.5). His 3.0 blocks per game ranks ninth in NCAA Division I.

Brimah was the Defensive Player of the Year in the American Athletic Conference after leading the country in blocked shots (121) and finishing second in blocks per game (3.46).

UConn plays Central Connecticut State on Wednesday at the XL Center.
