SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A supervisor at Puerto Rico's Institute of Forensic Sciences who was investigating the killing of a 70-year-old man during a home robbery has been accused of trying to steal more than $3,000 from the victim.

The U.S. territory's Justice Department said Tuesday that Anibal Gonzalez also is accused of stealing the victim's debit card and credit card at the scene of the death and running up an $800 bill. He also is charged with intimidating witnesses with a gun.

Gonzalez's wife Elizabeth Maldonado also has been charged. The couple faces charges including fraud and aggravated misappropriation. It was not immediately clear if they have an attorney.

Authorities say the victim's widow alerted them to the situation.
