PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Three school districts have been selected for a new program to prepare students for jobs in information technology, advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity.
The Rhode Island Commerce Corporation says its board and Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo chose the public school districts in Newport, Providence and Westerly for the Pathways in Technology Early College High School program, known as P-TECH.
Each district will receive a $200,000 grant to implement the program at their high schools, with an enrollment of 50 to 100 students.
The Commerce Corporation says the initial programs focus on key growth industries.
The schools will partner with employers in these industries for the 2016 to 2017 school year.
Raimondo says the state is re-imagining the high school experience to prepare students for high-wage, high-skills jobs.
