BRUSSELS (AP) — It's not known why Belgian authorities searched a Brussels home and detained a person for questioning on Sunday but the federal prosecutor says they're trying to establish what connection they may have to the Nov. 13 Paris attacks that killed 130 people. The prosecutor says once more is known, an official statement will be issued on Monday.
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Canada's minister of immigration and citizenship says the country's resettlement program for Syrian refugees could double its intake by the end of next year to 50,000. John McCallum was in the Jordanian capital of Amman on Sunday, meeting with Syrian families preparing to board flights to Canada. He told one family: "Everyone in Canada is waiting to meet you."
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City officials, family members and hundreds of fellow police officers are honoring the lives of two members of the NYPD who were gunned down in their cruiser a year ago. On Sunday, the mayor and police commissioner dedicated two bronze plaques inscribed with the names of officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos outside Brooklyn's 84th Precinct.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The weekend box office results for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" are out of this world. Studio estimates say J.J. Abrams' seventh chapter in George Lucas' space saga brought in $238 million, making the Disney film the biggest North American debut of all time. It eclipsed the opening record set by "Jurassic World," which drew $208.8 million this summer.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Miss Universe contestant from the Philippines is this year's winner but for one brief moment, it appeared as if it might be a repeat win for Colombia. Host Steve Harvey apologized for not reading the card correctly that named contestant Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach this year's winner and Colombia's Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo as first runner-up.
