SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The latest on the discovery of two dead children in a California storage facility (all times local):
7 p.m.
Police in the Northern California city of Redding, where the bodies of a boy and a girl were found inside a storage unit, say the children died somewhere else and that police in Salinas, where the children once lived, will lead the investigation.
Redding police said late Wednesday that detectives determined during the investigation the children's death occurred outside Shasta County. The police gave no other details.
The Redding and Salinas police departments did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
Officials say the Redding Police Department and the Shasta County District Attorney's Office will continue to assist with the investigation.
A 39-year-old woman and her 17-year-old companion are suspected in the deaths.

Child welfare workers visited a Northern California woman suspected in the deaths of two children four times in the past year on allegations of neglect.
Elliot Robinson, head of the Monterey County Department of Social Services, tells the San Francisco Chronicle in a story Wednesday that investigators couldn't find a big enough risk to the youngsters in her care to remove them from her apartment in Salinas.
The investigation led to a 9-year-old girl found Friday suffering from neglect and abuse 300 miles away in Quincy, where the woman had recently moved. Later, investigators found two small children dead in a storage unit 150 miles away in Redding.
The woman and a 17-year-old boy were arrested on abuse allegations related to the 9-year-old. They have not been charged in the deaths.
