CHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge has ruled that a Chicago police officer used excessive force by dragging a man from his jail cell after he was subdued with a stun gun.
Judge Matthew Kennelly's ruling Monday came in a lawsuit filed by the family of Philip Coleman, who later died at a hospital due to a reaction to an anti-psychotic drug. The ruling only pertains to how the 38-year-old was dragged from his cell, not how he died.
A jury will determine the amount in damages.
The city recently released video of the 2012 incident, which shows officers, including several who are black, trying to subdue Coleman.
Kennelly also ruled that the officer's supervisor should have stopped him from dragging Coleman.
