NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Authorities in New Orleans say the man accused of shooting a Tulane medical student has tried to "harm himself" inside Orleans Parish Prison.

Marc Ehrhardt, a spokesman for Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, says deputies entered Euric Cain's cell Sunday morning after a member of the medical staff learned he was having suicidal thoughts.

Deputies spotted Cain using a sweatshirt in an attempt to harm himself.

Authorities brought Cain to a nearby hospital as a precaution. They say he did not lose consciousness.

Cain is accused of shooting student Peter Gold last month. Gold survived, and has been released from the hospital. Officials say Cain also kidnapped and sexually assaulted a couple less than a day after the shooting.
