NEW YORK (AP) — Top New York officials are asking the federal government to help the state block people on the terror watch list from making gun purchases. Sen. Charles Schumer and Gov. Andrew Cuomo say the federal government doesn't currently give states access to classified background information about suspects on its terror watch list. They say New York should also be able to do criminal background checks on people who are on the watch list.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nine Republican presidential candidates who'll be debating in prime time on Tuesday will include Chris Christie. The New Jersey governor failed to qualify for the last prime-time debate, based on his polling numbers. Also making the cut is Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who CNN said was "on the bubble" of qualifying late last week. The four candidates who will be relegated to an earlier debate on Tuesday are Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, Lindsey Graham and George Pataki.

DENTON, Texas (AP) — University of North Texas campus police have fatally shot a student on the day after his 21st birthday, after he allegedly threatened an officer with an ax. University officials tell The Dallas Morning News that the shooting happened near the Denton campus early today, after police responded to a report that someone was breaking car windows. The Texas Rangers are investigating.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A truck driver is dead after a crash that touched off a fire at a Portland, Oregon, railroad yard. Police say a semi carrying some sort of fuel product crashed and fuel leaked underneath parked rail cars. Eight train cars containing asphalt were damaged. Nearby businesses were evacuated, a highway was closed and a half-marathon race in the area was canceled as crews responded to the blaze.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Marjorie Lord has died. She appeared on Broadway and in films, but was best known as Danny Thomas' wife on the 1950s TV sitcom "Make Room For Daddy." In two 1943 films — "Shantytown" and "Sherlock Holmes in Washington" — Lord appeared with her first husband, John Archer, who died in 1999. Their daughter is the film star Anne Archer. Marjorie Lord was 97.
