SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former Carbon County official is pleading not guilty to allegations that he used thousands of dollars in federal grant money to buy things for his houseboat.
Prosecutors say 45-year-old Jason Thomas Llewelyn spent at least $5,000 in money meant for the county to buy hundreds of things for himself and his houseboat instead.
He's accused of embezzling the money between December 2011 and August 2015.
Llewelyn pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one count of theft from programs receiving federal funds. If he's convicted he faces up to 10 years in prison.
He's also facing misusing public money charges in state court.
Llewelyn had served as a 10-year veteran of the sheriff's office and a member of the Helper City Council.
His lawyer didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.
