JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — An armed man drove onto Arkansas State University today, sparking a campus lockdown before police took him into custody without any shots fired. A university spokesman says the man was taken into custody about an hour after the incident began. The campus remains on lockdown as police inspect the man's truck.
BOSTON (AP) — It was a non-stop trip the passengers could have done without. A six-car train left a suburban Boston transit station without a driver and went past four stations before being brought to a halt. About 50 passengers were on board; none of them was hurt, although the intended driver was brushed by the train.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who left his military base in Afghanistan, was taken prisoner by the Taliban, then freed in a prisoner swap, is speaking publicly. In an interview carried on the popular podcast "Serial," Bergdahl, who faces charges of desertion, says he went missing because he wanted to expose what he called a failure of leadership at his post.
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are closing modestly higher as a rebound in the energy sector helped break a three-day losing streak for the market. Oil and gas companies rose far more than the rest of the market today. The Dow climbed 82 points to 17,574. The S&P rose four points. The Nasdaq increased 22.
SEATTLE (AP) — Thousands of motorists were stranded today during a major storm in the Pacific Northwest. The weather caused a landslide that stopped all northbound traffic on a major highway connecting Washington and Oregon. Forecasters say the storms that left two people dead are easing up, but the threat from slides and flooding remain.
