LAS VEGAS (AP) — A major union has announced it's endorsing Democratic Nevada state Sen. Ruben Kihuen in the crowded race for Rep. Cresent Hardy's congressional seat.

Kihuen's campaign said Wednesday that the SEIU Local 1107 was backing him. The group represents about 17,000 workers.

The group said Kihuen understands issues affecting them because he grew up in a labor family, and praised his attempts this past legislative session to raise wages and pass gender pay equality legislation.

Kihuen is in a competitive four-way Democratic primary to take freshman Republican Hardy's 4th Congressional District seat. Kihuen's opponents include Lucy Flores, John Oceguera and Susie Lee.

Democratic Sen. Harry Reid and other unions have also endorsed Kihuen.

The state's largest labor group, the Culinary Workers Union, has not yet endorsed a candidate in the race.
