SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Olene Smith Walker, Utah's first and only female governor, has died. She was 85. Amanda Covington, a former spokeswoman for Walker, says she died yesterday in Salt Lake City from natural causes. Considered one of the highest profile women in Utah politics, the Republican served as lieutenant governor for 11 years. She was elevated to governor when Gov. Mike Leavitt left in 2003 to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Planned Parenthood officials in Utah have issued assurances about security at its facilities in the wake of a deadly clinic shooting in Colorado. Planned Parenthood Association of Utah CEO Karrie Galloway said in a statement late Friday that the organization has "robust security measures" in place and works closely with law enforcement. Galloway says she is "heartbroken" about the shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's growing alcohol sales mean more funds for a campaign focused on parents' roles in preventing underage drinking. The Salt Lake Tribune reports an estimated $2.2 million will support ParentsEmpowered.org in 2016. Funding has increased steadily from $1.7 million in 2012, when lawmakers mandated a portion of revenue from liquor sales would support prevention efforts. While that fund has grown, Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control employees have faced budget cuts and pay that some say is low.

DRAPER, Utah (AP) — An organization that assists women and children fleeing polygamy is offering refuge in a newly remodeled home in Draper. Officials with Holding Out Help tell Salt Lake City's KUTV that the home will serve families transitioning into secular society. The 4,600-square-foot home has six bedrooms and will also be the setting for counseling and life skill classes.
