A fire burning in Ogden this afternoon looked bigger than it actually was. It happened at Pennsylvania Avenue, just west of I-15.
Fire crews say some materials set to be recycled started burning. They're still trying to figure out how it started. But the fire at Stone Castle recycling yard made a lot of smoke as it burned through cardboard boxes, TV sets, refrigerators and propane tanks.
When the propane tanks got hot, they started exploding, but it was the cardboard that caused all the smoke.
No buildings caught fire, just the recyclable materials stored outside in a yard.
One witness, Kelly Sanchez, said, "There was a lot of cars. It was full of black, black smoke. They hadn't got the white smoke before they started putting anything out yet. You know, there was a lot of smoke, a lot of cars, a lot of people running around."
Deputy Chief Chad Tucker, with the Ogden Fire Department said, "Our reports so far, there was nobody here, we don't know the cause of it. So this will be under investigation. We've got the fire marshal's office on their way, and we hope to see if we can find the cause of this, but sometimes it's difficult."
Tucker said right now there's no evidence that this was suspicious, but an investigator is on the scene, trying to determine the cause.
Pennsylvania Avenue was shut down for a while but is back open.
