CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Austin Peay has fired Kirby Cannon after a winless season with the Governors just 1-34 in the coach's three seasons.
Athletic director Ryan Ivey announced the move Monday.
Austin Peay will buy out the rest of Cannon's contract using private funds, and Ivey will lead a search committee for his replacement.
The athletic director says Austin Peay has not made the progress wanted, forcing officials to make the move. Running backs coach J.D. Sellers will be acting head coach in the interim.
Cannon took over a program that had only two winning seasons since the start of this century. His first season featured four straight road games including games at Tennessee and Vanderbilt in the Southeastern Conference. Cannon's lone win came in 2014 against Murray State.
