(KSL News) Three young siblings were hit by a car as they crossed a busy Salt Lake intersection this morning.

The children were crossing northbound on Parley's Way to a McDonald's restaurant when the traffic signal changed. A westbound driver slammed on his brakes when he spotted the children in his path, but he couldn't completely stop.

The man's vehicle knocked the 13-year-old off her bicycle, and the 9- and 6-year-olds off their motorized scooters. The 13-year-old had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The children's mother says all are doing OK now, just a little shaken up. She says their helmets kept this accident from becoming a tragedy. "The one that went to the hospital might not be doing so well if she hadn't put her helmet on," Holli McDonald said.

Police are still investigating the accident but caution all drivers keep observant, especially in the summer when children are out of school.
