SALT LAKE CITY — Utah motorists who hit the road for Thanksgiving should enjoy a break at the pumps.

The price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Utah dropped by 27 cents to $2.30 in the past month, according to the latest AAA report on fuel prices.

"While drilling activity reached its lowest point since June 2010 … total crude inventories in the U.S. continue to build and are within 10 million barrels of the record amount reached last spring," Rolayne Fairclough, AAA Utah spokeswoman, said in a statement. "This continued surplus contributes to the downward pressure on prices."

The report states that all cities surveyed in Utah posted double-digit decreases, with Odgen having the lowest average price at $2.13 per gallon and St. George having the highest average price at $2.54.

Provo reported the largest dip in average price of Utah's reporting cities with prices shrinking by 33 cents to $2.21. Salt Lake City was close behind with a 30-cent drop to $2.20 in the past month.

Nationally, AAA reports gas prices dipped by 11 cents to $2.21 in the past month. Six states reported sub-$2 prices, with South Carolina's $1.95 average representing the cheapest in the nation. Hawaii and California lead the nation with the highest gas prices per gallon at $2.87 and $2.84, respectively.

According to the report, planned and unplanned refinery repairs in the Midwest are raising prices, pushing some states over Utah's state average.

The report also noted that Idaho posted the lower average price of gas at $2.26 per gallon, despite having a higher gas tax and getting fuel from Utah refineries.
