SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Dec. 18 sentencing date has been set for San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman, convicted of leading an ATV protest ride through a closed canyon. Lyman was convicted along with southern Utah blogger Monte Wells in the 2014 ride that was designed to protest what organizers called federal overreach in closing a southeastern Utah canyon to motorized vehicles.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The State School Board approved a new policy Friday to resolve a conflict between two new state laws, one that allows people to skip tests mandated by the state or federal government and another that requires students pass a U.S. citizenship test. Parents can opt their children out of tests in Utah schools, but students won't be able to skip a new statewide civics exam if they want to graduate high school.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah state lawmaker who could not account for $24,000 in missing money has pleaded guilty to a fraud charge and resigned. Prosecutors say Democratic Rep. Justin Miller wrote a check to himself in April 2014 while he was campaign manager for Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams. Miller said in a statement that he failed to communicate in a timely and transparent manner.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Brigham Young University is selling shirts emblazoned with a made-up word that landed a Mormon leader in hot water after his son attempted to capitalize on the expression. BYU spokeswoman Carrie Jenkins says the university received 16 shirts with the word "ponderize," one day after mid-level leader Devin Durrant apologized for his son's effort to sell "ponderize" T-shirts.
