(KSL News) Utah's U.S. senators are offering condolences to the family of former Sen. Jesse Helms, who has died at the age of 86.

The North Carolina Republican, who served 30 years in Congress, died of natural causes early today -- Independence Day. Helms famously battled liberals and even some fellow GOP members on Capitol Hill.

Utah's Sen. Bob Bennett made the following statement: "For all of his reputation as a fierce fighter for conservative causes, Jesse Helms had the highest regard for the rights of those with differing opinions and was one of the most courteous and respectful men I have ever known. Joyce and I extend our deep sympathies to his family."

And Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch released a statement which reads: "I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing today of a truly great Senator, Jesse Helms. He was a man of great conviction and courage and a very close friend. He was a true icon who fought hard for what he believed in and he was indefatigable in his perseverance to get the job done.

"He left a lasting positive imprint on the United States Senate and American politics, through his hard work and dedication to the beliefs he held deeply. He will go down in history as one of the greatest conservatives to ever serve in the United States Senate. Elaine and I express our deepest sympathies to his family and friends who loved him dearly."
