MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia safety Karl Joseph will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a right knee injury during practice, coach Dana Holgorsen said Wednesday.
Holgorsen said the senior was injured in a non-contact drill Tuesday.
"I am devastated and heartbroken for Karl," Holgorsen said in a statement. "He is a young man who has given everything he has to our football program and university over the past four years and who elected to return to WVU for his senior season to earn his degree and to be a part of something special with this team."
Joseph started all 42 games of his career. His five interceptions this season were tied with three others for the lead in the Bowl Subdivision. Three of those came in the season opener against Georgia Southern.
Joseph was known for his punishing hits and was second on the team with 20 tackles this season.
"I want to thank my teammates and my coaches for their outpouring of support," Joseph said. "This has been difficult for me and my family but I know I will come through this stronger than ever."
West Virginia (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) plays No. 21 Oklahoma State (5-0, 2-0) on Saturday night in Morgantown.
