The story has been updated to reflect that the victim is a woman.SALT LAKE CITY — A woman was upgraded to stable condition after being hit by a semitruck while she was riding her bicycle Thursday morning, police said.
The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. near 400 West and 300 North in Salt Lake City, according to Salt Lake City police detective Dennis McGowan. The semitruck was traveling eastbound on 300 North when it turned left onto 400 West, hitting the woman on the bike before driving off. The semitruck driver may not have realized that they hit someone, McGowan said.
"These rigs are so big and they take out traffic lights without even realizing it," McGowan said.
The woman struck her head on the ground and was dragged a "short ways" by the semi, police said. The 25-year-old female bicyclist was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
"You've got to look out for bicyclist and pedestrians, especially around the school," Salt Lake Police Lt. Mike Ross said.
Police have not yet been able to locate the driver and are looking for a semitruck with a long red, flatbed trailer.
The north and southbound lanes of 400 West were closed at 300 North for several hours during the accident investigation.
