UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Jordan is making an impassioned plea for the world's countries to take in more Syrian refugees. The tiny country says it's overwhelmed by those fleeing the conflict in Syria. Jordan is hosting about 630,000 Syrian refugees, equivalent to about 10 percent of its population. A Jordanian official tells the United Nations that would be like the United States having to absorb 64 million more people. He says the burden has been "devastating" to Jordan's development efforts.

LOWER MERION, Pa. (AP) — Pope Francis is resting up at a suburban seminary after arriving in Philadelphia this morning and immediately celebrating Mass. After the breather, he's scheduled to return to the cathedral where he celebrated Mass and transfer to the popemobile for a mile-and-a-half journey through downtown. He will give a late-afternoon speech focusing on religious freedom and immigration at Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed.

MADRID (AP) — The Spanish government is asking a Volkswagen subsidiary to return subsidies it received to produce "efficient vehicles." Spain's minister of industry, energy and tourism, says he expects the subsidiary, SEAT, to tell his ministry how many vehicles it had produced and sold containing software that cheats on diesel engine emissions tests. He did not give a figure for the amount of money he expected to be returned.

WASHINGTON, N.J. (AP) — Coaches, students and community members have gathered at a New Jersey high school's football field to honor a player who died after a game last night. Warren Hills Regional High School quarterback Evan Murray was a three-sport athlete who had been the football team's starting quarterback for three years. People who attended the game said Murray walked off the field under his own power after taking a hit in the backfield, then apparently collapsed a short time later.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A total lunar eclipse will share the stage with a so-called supermoon tomorrow night or early Monday, depending where you are. That combination hasn't been seen since 1982 and won't happen again until 2033. It will be the closest full moon of the year, and will look bigger and brighter than usual. The full eclipse will last more than an hour and be visible, weather permitting, from North and South America, Europe, Africa and western Asia.
