WASHINGTON (AP) — One of the most powerful people in the nation's capital is walking away from Washington. House Speaker John Boehner shocked his colleagues with his sudden resignation. After 13 terms representing an Ohio district and five years after reaching the level of second in line to the presidency, Boehner says he's had enough. His departure, scheduled for the end of October, comes before he could have faced a potential floor fight to oust him as speaker. The revolt was led by tea partyers who are demanding a government shutdown if funding isn't stripped for Planned Parenthood.

NEW YORK (AP) — Thousands have packed New York's Madison Square Garden for a Mass led by Pope Francis. The pope praised big cities for their diversity and culture but warned that they can also make their people feel they don't belong. Earlier at the United Nations, he called for a world free of nuclear weapons.

MINA, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Iran is leading a chorus of international criticism of Saudi Arabia because of a hajj disaster that killed over 700 pilgrims to Mecca. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani blames Saudi "ineptitude." At least 140 Iranians were killed in a stampede.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church has issued a statement to followers not to get worked up about a rare "blood moon" and speculation that it's an apocalyptic sign. The lunar event has led to a rise in sales at emergency preparedness retailers. The red tint on Sunday is the result of an eclipse that will also make the moon appear larger than usual.

HOUSTON (AP) — Texas prison officials are helping their counterparts in Virginia prepare for a scheduled execution next week by providing the state with pentobarbital. Corrections agencies nationwide have had trouble obtaining it. Three vials of the drug are said to have come from an unidentified pharmacy.
