NEWTON, Cache County — A 76-year-old man died in a possible drowning accident while kayaking with his wife on Cutler Reservoir Sunday, according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office.

The Logan man, whose name was not immediately released, was on Cutler Reservoir with his wife just after 11 a.m. Each were in separate kayaks, said Sheriff's Lt. Mike Peterson. They had paddled about a mile north of the boat dock when they both fell out of their kayaks, Peterson said. Neither was wearing a lifejacket.

"The wife was securing her boat while the male swam toward shore. Both were communicating by voice with each other. After just a few minutes the wife noticed her husband had stopped talking to her. As she moved to check on him she found he was face down in the water," he said.

The Cache County Search and Rescue team and emergency crews from Newton, Smithfield, and Logan assisted. A citizen with a boat helped transport first responders to the man but he was unresponsive, Peterson said.

The man's body was taken to the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office to determine an exact cause of death.

Editor's Note: Officials originally said the man was 77. They later corrected his age to 76.
