BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Scientists say that if increasingly destructive wildfires in the Great Basin can't be stopped the sage grouse population will be cut in half over the next three decades. The report released by the U.S. Geological Survey comes just ahead of a court-ordered Sept. 30 deadline faced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to decide whether sage grouse need protection under the Endangered Species Act. The study also identified ways to avert those declines by classifying areas for their resilience and then applying suitable strategies.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise police say a woman was wounded and a man has been arrested after a backyard shooting. The Idaho Statesman reports that police arrested 35-year-old Christopher Wirfs of Boise for investigation of two felony counts of aggravated battery and possession of a firearm. Investigators say Wirfs and the woman knew each other.
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Scientific research into nuclear fuel becomes art in a new exhibit launching later this month at the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho. The Post Register reports the exhibit by local artist Joe Pehrson aims to make the some of the science done at the Idaho National Laboratory more accessible to the public. The exhibit opens Sept. 30.
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — A wildfire burning in the central part of Yellowstone National Park continues to grow and has burned about 2 square miles. However, since the fire isn't threatening any park buildings or putting visitors at risk, fire managers are letting it burn. The fire about 10 miles west of Fishing Bridge.
