LONDON (AP) — Former England goalkeeper Ron Springett, who played at the 1962 World Cup but was an unused squad member four years later as the team triumphed, has died. He was 80.
The Football Association said Sunday that the former Sheffield Wednesday and Queens Park Rangers player died following a short illness, which it did not specify.
Springett reached the quarterfinals with England at the 1962 World Cup in Chile where the team was knocked out by Brazil.
The last of his 33 international appearances came shortly before the 1966 World Cup, losing his place to Gordon Banks as England lifted the trophy.
He received a winner's medal in 2009 following a campaign to honor squad members who didn't play in the final.
