BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) — Joe Minden passed for three touchdowns, Carson Earp threw for two more and Lamar opened its season with a 66-3 win over NAIA Bacone on Saturday night.
Minden finished 16 of 20 for 170 yards and Earp completed 5 of 6 for 91 — both with no interceptions. Lamar balanced its attack with 264 yards rushing and 261 passing while holding the Warriors to 55 and 27 yards respectively.
The Cardinals pulled away with a 31-point second quarter and led 45-0 at the break. Both coaches agreed to shorten the third and fourth quarters to 10 minutes each.
Roderick Mackey ran 19 times for 91 yards to lead the Warriors, who trailed 59-0 before Blake Pierce's 24-yard field goal gave them their only points.
Lamar visits No. 4 Baylor next Saturday and opens its conference schedule the following week with Sam Houston State.
