COMPTON, Calif. (AP) — A small earthquake has rattled a highly populated area in southern Los Angeles County, but there are no reports of damage or injury.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-2.9 quake struck at 9:05 a.m. Monday, a mile southwest of Compton and about 10 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

The USGS says the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 7.4 miles.

A dispatcher says the Compton sheriff's station briefly shook but there have been no calls regarding the quake.
