TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Pima County Health Department officials have confirmed that West Nile virus may have contributed to the death of an elderly woman in the Tucson area.
The woman had also been suffering from other health complications.
She died earlier this month and her name and age haven't been released.
The county health department and Arizona Department of Health Services completed their investigation of the case Wednesday.
Health officials say it's the first case of West Nile confirmed in Pima County this year.
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.
Those over the age of 50 are at higher risk and can develop more-serious symptoms, which can result in long-lasting or permanent neurological damage.
