KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Houston Astros have cleared roster space for newly acquired pitcher Scott Kazmir by optioning outfielder L.J. Hoes to Triple-A Fresno.

Kazmir was set to start Friday night at Kansas City. The Astros got the left-hander Thursday in a trade with Oakland.

Hoes started four games for Houston after being promoted from the minors on July 12. He's hit .267 in eight games in two stints this season with Houston.

The Astros also said outfielder Alex Presley cleared waivers and was outrighted to Fresno. Presley, who played with Pittsburgh and Minnesota before joining the Astros last year, has three days to accept the assignment or opt for free agency.
