Road closures, parade routes for SLC, Bountiful Pioneer Day celebrations

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City and Bountiful have several festivities planned for its annual Pioneer Day celebrations, some of which will cause road closures and delays.

The Salt Lake City road closures will begin Friday shortly before 5 a.m. and continue until about noon, according to Salt Lake City police. Commuters should avoid driving in the areas for the Salt Lake City Days of '47 Parade route and the routes of the Deseret News Classic marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K races.

Police asked the public to not set up or save spaces along the Salt Lake City parade route prior to 8 p.m. Thursday. People are only allowed to use a canopy or see-through tents along the route to ensure that others can see the parade. Any vehicles along the parade route after 8 p.m. Thursday will be towed and dogs –excluding service animals— are not permitted along the parade route, police said.

Salt Lake City Days of '47 Parade =================================

The parade begins at 9 a.m. Friday and starts at the intersection of South Temple and State Street. The route runs east to 200 East, then turns south to 900 South and then turns east where it ends at Liberty Park at 600 E. 900 South.

Deseret News Classic races ==========================

The Deseret News marathon was first run in 1970 and is the oldest road race in Utah and the fourth oldest marathon west of the continental divide. The marathon follows the path that the Utah pioneers traveled when they first entered the Salt Lake Valley. The marathon begins at 5:30 am at the top of Big Mountain, above Emigration Canyon and the half marathon begins in Emigration Canyon.

The 10K begins at 6 a.m. at Research Park on Chipeta Way and the 5K begins at 7 a.m. at the Wasatch Elementary School Playground and finishes at Liberty Park.

Bountiful Handcart Days Parade ==============================

The 65th annual Grand Parade will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. It will begin at 1500 S. Main Street and will run north from 1500 South to 400 North. People can begin saving spots along the route after 7 a.m. Thursday, according to the Bountiful Handcart Days website.
