(KSL News) The trial of a man accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend after she refused to have sex with him is underway in West Jordan.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Parley Jeffs Dutson is charged with first-degree felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Kara Hopkins last April.

During opening statements yesterday, prosecutors told the jury Dutson attacked Hopkins in front of several people at a party, attempting to rape her, and then shot her in the back of the head as she attempted to hide from him.

Defense attorneys are expected to argue Dutson's drug use at the time of the incident contributed to his actions.
