COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A man with several outstanding arrest warrants barricaded himself in a home Friday evening and remained there hours later, refusing to make contact with police, officials said.

The combined SWAT team of the Cottonwood Heights and Sandy police departments surrounded the home in the area of 7450 South and 2135 East, said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Corbett Ford.

"We've evacuated as many residents as we safely can and have had others to shelter in place," Ford said.

Officers arrived at the home of 43-year-old Gabriel Roybal around 6 p.m., Ford said, and planned to arrest him on warrants for alleged robbery, fleeing and possession of a stolen vehicle. Roybal was reportedly in his garage and saw the officer approach. Police say he then retreated inside the main area of the home and refused to answer the door.

Phone calls to Roybal were also unanswered, Ford said. Police don't believe anyone was with the man.

Roybal is known to carry firearms, Ford said. SWAT officers were prepared to enter the home Friday night if necessary, he said.
