Sam Penrod ReportingA fire burned in an abandoned building near the Gateway this afternoon.
It's under control now, but the fire started just after 3:30 at 100 S 500 W. The building used to be home to Club Impulse; it was under renovation. The fire started in a debris pile outside the building.
The fire was called in by a Salt Lake City fire truck that was responding to a medical emergency. They saw the smoke and radioed it in. Another crew quickly arrived on the scene.
A few workers were inside the building at the time, but escaped without injury. Falling debris knocked out a firefighter. The injured firefighter was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
During the course of fighting the fire debris struck one of the firefighters and knocked him out. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
The fire caused limited damage.
Firefighters didn't have to evacuate anyone. The building is several hundred feet away from the condominiums at the Gateway
