TORONTO (AP) — Rookie outfielder Rusney Castillo has rejoined the Boston Red Sox on a standby basis, just in case Hanley Ramirez's injured hand doesn't heal in the next day or two.

Castillo joined the team in Toronto but wasn't added to the active roster for Tuesday night's game against the Blue Jays.

If he isn't activated Wednesday, he must return to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Ramirez was out of the lineup for the sixth straight game while his ailing left hand heals. The left fielder is batting .283 and leads the Red Sox with 15 home runs and 38 RBIs.

He was injured on the bases when he was struck in the hand by a ball off the bat of teammate Xander Bogaerts.

Boston manager John Farrell said Ramirez hit off a tee Monday night and in the cage Tuesday. He took full batting practice Tuesday and could return to the lineup Wednesday.

"Things are coming together as we had hoped they would," Farrell said.

In other news, the Red Sox signed first-round pick Andrew Benintendi, an outfielder from Arkansas drafted seventh overall three weeks ago.

Benintendi won this year's Golden Spikes Award, given to the top amateur player in the nation, and the Dick Howser Trophy, presented to the most outstanding college player.
