This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
The roots of Petzl lie in its founders' desire to serve their passion: exploration. They were cavers who loved to venture into tight and dark places, but spelunking was a relatively new sport at that time, and equipment was rudimentary at best. Based upon the needs they saw, they started innovating and eventually developed a line of caving products that includes rope ascenders and headlamps.
Over 40 years later, the company they started now has international impact, serving climbers around the world. France-based Petzl now has a North American headquarters, Petzl America in West Valley City, which is contributing to Utah's strong export base in serving customers worldwide. Being a French company, they have a strong presence in Europe; however, they're also selling to Latin America and the East.
Jason Hall, CFO of Petzl America, says the team continues to create innovative solutions, tools or services to help people through vertical or dark environments. Their main product line includes rock-climbing products as well as ropes, harnesses, helmets, carabineers, accessories and headlamps. Here in Utah they often host speakers from around the world who are prominent climbers.
Petzl has also found great success through diversifying. Their equipment is being used in the professional as well as recreational market. In the over 10 industries they serve, they're known as a significant player that provides equipment for people working at heights.
When you're out adventuring, you want to know your equipment will protect you. So, Petzl America does extensive testing. As an engineering-centric company, they're closely connected to the industry so when new product needs arise, the team of engineers and designers is ready. Their level of R&D has resulted in products created with a high level of accuracy and precision, giving them a reputation as a premier company in their field. Their advantage comes from their expertise and the passion the company was founded on.
