FARMINGTON — The summer season is here, and that means more people are out enjoying what Utah has to offer. With that in mind, local authorities wanted to take the time to remind outdoor enthusiasts to be safe.
Bikers, hikers and their families enjoyed the great outdoors Sunday afternoon. The weather has been cooperative and plenty of people take that opportunity to spend time in the mountains.
“It’s nice weather,” said hiker Dan White. “And it’s kind of our first hike of the year.”
While beautiful, this can be a dangerous time of year.
Authorities said a 19-year-old man hiking with friends in Farmington Canyon Saturday night fell 33 feet. By the time crews reached him, it was too dark to hoist him out. They spent the night on the mountain and flew the hiker to the hospital Sunday morning.
- Know your route
- Check the forecast before leaving
- Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back
- Take adequate supplies, especially water
- Wear proper clothing
- Stay on marked trails
Authorities said this serves as an important reminder.
“We always recommend being prepared, have water, have proper clothing, let people know where you’re going to be when you go on these outings,” said Deputy Joshua Boucher of the Davis County Sheriff’s Office.
They also said to know your limits and to not attempt anything beyond your comfort level.
The hurt 19-year-old hiker is now at a hospital being treated for his injuries.
