Tom Callan reportingThe economy is slow, but the demand for one group of workers has never been greater.

Salt Lake County is looking to hire 4,000 poll workers for election day, Nov. 4.

"We'll start recruiting about Aug. 1," said Rozan Mitchell, with the election division.

She says we're not talking about unpaid volunteers.

"It's $120. A couple of positions are paid a little more than that," she explained.

She says if they can't find enough poll workers, they will pick up the phone and start cold calling.

"Anybody could get a call from us just pleading for help," she said.

She says these days poll workers are no longer only retirees, but also the young who are enamored of electronic voting.
