NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — The historic whaling city of New Bedford would host the Olympic sailing competition on Buzzards Bay if Boston is chosen for the 2024 Summer Games.
The city, about 60 miles south of Boston, also would host Paralympic sailing events.
New Bedford Mayor John Mitchell and Rich Davey of the Boston 2024 Partnership announced the plans Thursday.
The proposed site for the sailing events already hosts the Buzzards Bay Regatta, a major multi-class competition.
Boston, Rome and Hamburg, Germany are declared bidders for the 2024 Summer Games. Paris and Budapest, Hungary, are expected to join that group before the Sept. 15 deadline for submitting bids. The International Olympic Committee is scheduled to choose the host city in 2017.
