SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church has removed missionaries from Burundi following violent protests in its capital.

KSL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1BKywiu ) that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced in a press statement Tuesday that it had moved its missionaries there.

The protesters are opposing the president's decision to run for a third term, and police have been firing live bullets at the protesters.

The Burundi missionaries are part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Lubumbashi Mission.

A church spokesman says moving missionaries to ensure their safety is a common practice throughout the world.
