RENO, Nev. (AP) — A former spokeswoman for the Washoe County sheriff's department has been appointed to the newly created position of public information officer at the district attorney's office.

Washoe County DA Chris Hicks announced the appointment of Michelle Bays to the job he says he thinks is important to help keep the community and local media informed about his office's activities and county prosecutions.

Bays is a supervising investigator who joined the office's investigations division in 2008. She began her law enforcement career at the sheriff's office in 2008 and served a number of years as its PIO when she went by the name Michelle Youngs.

Bays earned a masters' degree in political science at the University of Nevada, Reno. She started her new job Tuesday.
