GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) — The Greenwood School District may close W.C. Williams Elementary School at the end of the current school year to save money.
Under the proposed plan, the 400 students from the elementary school would be sent to Bankston and Threadgill elementary schools in the fall.
School Board President Bill Clay tells The Greenwood Commonwealth (http://bit.ly/1EkcV06 ) that closing the school will save about $500,000 per year plus maintenance expenses.
School district spokeswoman Margaret Dean says closing the school is one of several possible cost saving options.
The school board has been seeking to cut costs, as the district has tapped into reserve funds while running up a budget deficit over the past two years. Clay says significant savings would need to be found before the board finalizes its budget for next year.
