LAS VEGAS (AP) — Immigration activists and community leaders are again demanding Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt remove the state from a federal lawsuit aiming to stop a White House proposal granting deportation reprieves to parents of U.S. citizens, in the country illegally.
The Progressive Leadership of Alliance of Nevada, Culinary Union Local 226 and Mi Familia Vota Nevada said Tuesday the groups would deliver Laxalt a letter calling the lawsuit mean-spirited, saying resources could be better spent than picking a fight with the president.
Nevada is among 26 states suing to stop the proposal due to take effect May 19 if not for a court injunction. The proposal's supporters held rallies nationwide.
Laxalt says in a statement the lawsuit transcends immigration policy and rather questions the president's ability to make laws unilaterally.
