CENTERVILLE — Two school buses transporting 61 Centerville Junior High students collided Thursday afternoon and six students received minor injuries, police said.
The accident occurred as the buses were traveling northbound near 1450 N. Main St. around 3:10 p.m., according to Centerville police. Officials said one bus slowed down and another school bus hit it.
Four students in the bus that was hit received minor injuries during the collision and were evaluated by EMS on scene, but didn’t require medical transport. The students had neck and abdominal pains, according to Jeff Bassett, fire chief at South Davis Metro Fire.
The students were all removed from the buses and parents picked them up at an LDS Church meetinghouse on 1450 N. Main Street, police said.
Some students were transported to their bus stops on another bus, Bassett said.
The bus driver in the bus that was hit complained of back and neck pain and was evaluated on scene but denied medical care or transportation to the hospital, Bassett said.
The back end of the bus received structure and damage, including broken glass at the emergency door, Basset said.
Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved in this situation. They believe it the bus driver who hit the other bus may have been daydreaming or distracted, according to Rolynn Snow with the Centerville Police Department.
A citation will be issued, but police do not yet know what that citation will be, Snow said.
Snow said their first concern is the safety of the children, and the typical response when they arrive on scene is to check for injuries. They then relay that responsibility to EMS and the fire department while police check on security and coordinate with the school district to make sure the kids are safe on the bus and parents are contacted.
Centerville police and the Utah Highway Patrol are investigating the case, Basset said.
