PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Harsh words for the engineer at the controls of the derailed Amtrak train that hurtled into a curve in Philadelphia last night at 106 mph. Mayor Michael Nutter told CNN that the engineer was "reckless and irresponsible." Federal investigators say the emergency brakes were applied just before the crash. The engineer, who has hired an attorney, hasn't spoken with investigators. The crash has killed at least 7 people.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-controlled House has voted to approve deep spending cuts to Amtrak's budget. The vote came less than a day after the deadly train crash in Philadelphia that left seven dead. Democratic attempts to boost spending on Amtrak by more than $1 billion were defeated. The vote was along party lines.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Police in Kabul, Afghanistan, say a siege at a guesthouse has ended with five dead and 6 wounded. More than 50 people were rescued. The U.S. Embassy in Kabul says one American was killed in the attack. Authorities say gunmen staged a late Wednesday attack on the Park Palace Hotel.

BOSTON (AP) — A federal jury in Boston has wrapped up its first day of deliberations on a sentence for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv). The jury will reconvene tomorrow. It must decide whether gets Tsarnaev gets the death penalty for the 2013 attack or spends the rest of his life in prison. Execution will require a unanimous decision.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Police in Tucson, Arizona, say a man gunned down four of his family members, including his 17-year-old niece, before fatally shooting himself. It's not clear what prompted the carnage in a home in a blue-collar neighborhood on the south side of Tucson.
